Domain Name Rules-of-Thumb
 |
Beyond
question, the shorter, the better.
Exceptions:
1. If it costs too much. Two letter domain names may be very
high and not worth the price.
2. If the name results in an unfortunate combination: for
example, if a company were named Winchester International
Medical Products, it would be a big mistake for them to get
the name wimp.com . |
 | .com is crucial.
1. With .net or .org, visitors are always forgetting to change
from .com and end up being unable to log onto the site.
2. There have been research articles indicating that it is
very hard to get .net indexed by the search engines. |
 | Having a domain name is like
having a deed to a building. As long as you have it, no one
else can get it.
It follows that a company should get all the combinations it
can. Names disappear in a second, and millions are registered
all the time. Once gone, a name is likely to be gone for the
lifetime of the CEO. Unless a company is on a very tight
budget, they should get myname.com, myname.net, myname.info,
myname.org, myname.biz, and
possibly .ws and .us. |
Note: If
your company does business in your local area only, one or
two domain names are probably sufficient. If, however,
you plan to do national or international business, locking
up all combinations of your name is a must! At our
prices, you can get dozens of names without causing your
financial officer to rant.
 | The simpler and less
confusing the better. |
